The other day I had gone to book my railway ticket at the reservation counter at Okhla. After patiently waiting for more than an hour in the queue, just when I reached the window, there was a power failure. Though the computers were in UPS, the clerks manning them did not want the unexpected break to go waste. So they started counting notes, tallying the accounts and chatting. However hard did I try to tell them that they were befooling people, they would not budge. I gave up, exasperated. I was convinced that in our country the government machineries do not work. These people should learn from the private sector how to work efficiently.
I have been using quite a few Credit Cards of foreign banks since past few years. One of the banks regularly sends me sms reminding me of my outstanding payments. Even in certain months, when I do not make any purchase using their card, they do not fail to send me the regular reminder which reads as “Outstanding on your Card no 999999999 is Rs 0. Please pay full or minimum amount of Rs. 0 by the due date”. Now that’s some efficiency !!
Now, you have contributed to this privatisation debate that media has been fanning for past few days. Issue is that despite claims, privatisation has not been as effective because one hour official power cut in Mumbai had to be announced! To have a power cut in Mumbai, something that has not happen before, means huge loss to various industries.
Right now there is lot of hue and cry going on about it, and people are beginning to question the efficiency and virtues of privatisation. Though, in my heart, I concede that private sector is relativelybetter than public sector.
Rajib : I had only tried to make visible the difference of efficiency level between Private & Public sector in this example. However, it would be wrong to generalise the systems altogether. As I have myself witnessed some instances of commitment in public sector that is hard to match by the highly paid private sector employee working in the same industry. Will write about them in some future posts.
